St Oliver Plunkett 0-2 St Margarets 6-15 (33)

Magnificent Margarets win Div 11 North!!

Unbeaten in 14 league games, Maggies clinch title with win over Plunketts

Well it wasn't going to end any other way was it? On the day when the narrative was to keep calm, play the game in front of them, focus and concentrate on the next 60 minutes - it ended up being precisely that!

This team are a team that have slowly learned from Game 1 against Na Fianna that every game is taken with the same gravity as the previous one and their leaders don't allow anyone to play otherwise!

St Margarets played this game with style - a first half wind and downhill advantage - they blew Plunketts out of the sky with thrilling running, amazing interplay, missile accurate passing, and unbelievable finishing! Margarets were up 2-04 within the first 5 minutes!

It's a fine day for any team when their star forward is on fire - and this was one of those days - Paul Lumley take a bow son! This lad is thrilling in this form - scoring 3-05 in total but setting up the team early on to be able to win this match!

At half time, Margarets were missing their inspirational coach - Robert Byrne - but management - Micheal Kennedy, Declin Cowley, Jamie Nugent made sure that everyone knew that this game wasn't over and that they were to win the half - period.

In the 2nd half, Margarets just oozed class and really showed why they've won this division. No matter what's put up in front of them, they just figure it out - and this was exactly that - they figured out a way - against a hurt opponent to plunge the dagger.

Against a fierce uphill and wind against them - they ran, passed, talked - and scored at short distance whilst their magnificent defence - led by the magnificent Pat Daly - controlled every movement of the ball when it came into their territory.

We even seen a collectors item in this half - a Maradona type mazy run and clinical goal from Thomas Kennedy! This defender - compared to Virgil Van Dyke in Gaelic Football circles - has the eye of an eagle when it comes to sneaky goals!

Well done to everyone on this squad this year - and it can't be emphasised enough - but a squad contributed to this effort!

Every single player can look at moments they've contributed to - and that was the key! There were loads of hairy moments along the way - the battles against Garristown, Ballymun, Man O War, Mearnog, Isles, St Peregrines & Lusk could have gone either way - but they always found a way through somehow!

St Margarets 3-09 (18) Round Towers Lusk 3-06 (15)

Top of the Table clash doesn't disappoint

2 heavy weights of this division went head to head this evening

As many commentators expressed - this isn't the lower devisions of old - this is a generation of fit, highly motivated players who give everything for their club and team mates.

This was end to end like you wouldn't believe in this sport. Round Towers Lusk coming to knock their challengers off their perch!

Looking at the league table, Round Towers hadn't lost a single game in this campaign (an unfortunate COVID ridden W/O  against Naomh Mearnóg) and wow did they bring to this clash - a young, fit, mobile, intelligent pack of ultra hungry ANIMALS! There was no doubt before this clash - looking at this highly motivated squad - that Margarets were ripe for the picking!

Margarets have bet teams in this division with a huge mixture of experience and youth - a few teams complaining about several of the squad being too young - but this evenings clash brought to the fore, 2 clubs and teams that were genuinely focused on bringing through youth under the guidance of experience!

A clash of the titans ensued

Round Towers chose to play downhill in the first half and started brightly - their mobile, fast team passing with great accuracy and pace scoring 0-2 within the first 5 minutes.

SM 0-0 | RT 0-1
SM 0-0 | RT 0-2

St Margarets as seems to be the norm in this league felt their opposition out and more quickly than more recent outings got into the game more quickly - Dave Martin & Tommy Flood scoring long range points - 02-02 after 9 minutes

SM 0-1 | RT 0-2 - Dave Martin
SM 0-2 | RT 0-2 - Thomas Flood

There is nothing to excite the hard core of Gaelic Football than seeing a mobile team like this Round Tower side combine accurate passing and intelligent movement to conjure opportunities - but this is the state of play in Lusk - all of their teams are full of talent now - this is a club truly destined for the stars!

Having said that - Lusk in the opening 15 - could have been another 5 points up was it not for some really narrow wides! They're inaccuracies more to do with the feverish defensive unit of Tucker Daly, Robbie Lumley and Thomas Kennedy putting in last minutes tackles!

Margarets were still feeling out this opponent and it was hard to understand whether they were intimidated by the challenge! Round Towers were swaggering with confidence and seemingly destined to take over at the top!

But this side have had many challenge this year - and this side have been behind many times - against more physical teams - where there could have been no way back (Mearnog, Erin Isles) - and they slowly started to work the ball up the park and settle

But mid way through the first half - the unthinkable occurred - St Margarets had a man sent off with a straight red! As occurred in the previous encounter with Peregrines, star midfielder - Philly Mc Carthy received a straight red for an awkward tackle! It was late and it could have been nothing - but the ref decided that it was overly aggressive and Margarets were down to 14 with 15 minutes played!

What ensued for the next 7 minutes is how every team reacts to having a numerical advantage - hold the ball and let the side line figure it out in time! Round Towers moved the Margarets half backs and half forwards around with the ultimate ease and calm. Shell shocked - Margarets tried to cover spaces and man mark - but the ultimate punishment came a few moments later when Round Towers inflicted the first hammer blow of the game - a goal from a well worked passage of play by the Lusk forwards!

SM 0-2 | RT 1-2 (5)

At this point earthly teams might have lost their heads (as seen by Monicas) - and this is not saying St Margarets didn't initially as they tried to manoeuvre from the storm - players arguing, the sideline being warned, the referee being berated - but eventually the leaders took control - Declin Cowley, Pat Daly, David Martin - calmly figuring out positions and talking to younger players - Margarets gradually came to terms with the Lusk bombardment - limiting this relentless team to a single point! actually extraordinary! - every man out on their feet covering for each other!

SM 0-3 | RT 1-3 (6)

Lusk seemed to tire! they couldn't figure out the chaos! They had 6-7 minutes where they battered their opposition but they seemed to run out of ideas due to the tight, aggressive marking that Margarets had to switch to - it was like Margarets had the extra man!  The Margarets men were working over time for each other - everyone moving, everyone supporting one another - it was enthralling to see this collective movement of lads refuse to give this season up without the biggest of fights!

The previous week - Margarets (v Peregrines) had been spooked with the ease at which a 14 man unit can cause the right sort of chaos to win any game - and on this occasion they realised just that - firmly taking the wind out of Round Towers sails and putting doubt in the minds of this whirl wind side!

Margarets sensed blood - and conjured up 10-15 passes for Paul Lumley to eventually be fouled in the corner! After the referee deemed Lumley to have retaliated, the hop ball was won furiously, the ball quickly passed to Jason Shanahan who scored a wonderful long range point to make it clear - Margarets were going to fight for everything!

SM 0-3 | RT 1-2 (5) - Jason Shanahan
SM 0-3 | RT 1-3 (6)

Margarets had their tails up and the sudden realisation from the Shanahan point that this game was alive energised everyone - lads now on their toes - and what culminated next was a flowing move straight from the kick out! A wonderful catch from the kick out by the extraordinary David Martin started a 25 pass move and ended with the astonishingly talented Scott Kennedy bursting the net! Unreal drama!

SM 1-3 (6) | RT 1-3 (6) - Scott Kennedy

If Shanahan's point energised initially, Kennedys goal was the catalyst that really made them believe that 14 men could cope with the certain onslaught in the second half!

SM 1-3 (6) | RT 1-4 (7)

The drama wasn't over!

Having pulled a point back, Lusk thought they were in again on the cusp of half time! They moved the ball brilliantly down the park, always passing to a free man then suddenly down their right, their corner forward broke free and was barrelling down on goals - the only option was for Thomas Kennedy to attempt a last gasp tackle and leave his full forward - but keeper Richie Cantwell saw the pass and managed to safe from point blank and clear! It was going to be one of these games - the ebb and flow unbearable - Margarets got in at half time with the smallest of damage from the sending off!

The low scoring nature of this encounter reflecting the gravity of this tie - essentially a winners take all encounter!

SM 1-3 (6) | RT 1-4 (7)

There was a sense of huge relief at the break with lads sprawled around the place trying to recover from a gruelling encounter. Management met in a huddle with coach Robert Byrne plotting out the 2nd half and how his team were going to deal with a free man. Eventually management relayed that information.

What strikes this author about this team is that there doesn't have to be shouting to get information across - Byrne explained what was going wrong and how to fix it - and his players listened and understood how they were to set up and play. There are also major leaders in this team - Declin Cowley, Thomas Flood, Pat Daly, David Martin, John Kennedy who just work everything out!

Tactically Byrne and his management team moved Ciaran Bruton and Scott Kennedy to the half back positions where they were given instructions to mark loosely and break when they could!

The final words from Byrne said it all - leave nothing out there!

Lusk were playing uphill in the 2nd half and started as you'd expect - fast with strong runners everywhere. They tried to play accurate long alls up the wings and had runners through the center - Margarets half forwards had no choice sometimes to track back and stick with the runners.

St Peregrines 3-08 (17) St Margarets 2-18 (24)

St Margarets travelled to a resurgent Peregrines side on a tropical evening in Blakestown Road

A hard pitch, sweltering heat and up against a team full of skilful hard runners, St Margarets were faced with one of their toughest tasks to date in Div 11

As happened the previous Thursday evening, St Margarets started slow but that was more to do with their opponents - St Peregrines were full of running, skill and passing - the confidence was obvious - Peregrines had pointed 18 against St Maurs on Thursday!

In this period, Peregrines scored 3 to Margarets 1 - the excellent Paul Lumley knocking over.

If they didn't know it by now - Peregrines were being watched carefully by a strict referee who wasn't letting anything go - tough tackling, pulling / pushing were all being penalised. In this period the home side had a mentor sent to the stand plus several warnings and 2 yellow cards.

Peregrines pressure came to the fore in the 12th minute when a break on the left allowed a free run in for their left corner forward - full back Thomas Kennedy having to leave his man to make a last gasp tackle - a wild deflection sending the ball spinning into the net - 1-3 (6) to 0-3.

This seemed to waken the away side and 5 unanswered points sent them 2 up - 1-3 (6) to 0-8 - St Margarets looking a lot more assured now - led by the excellent Pat Daly and John Kennedy - at the back and David Martin, Philly McCarthy in midfield.

One aspect of this teams play that's a match for any team in this Division is their forward line and the quick interplay and movement - Drew Barnwell, Paul Lumley, Jay Shanahan, Scott Kennedy - all combining to move the Peregrine backs all over the pitch.

St Margarets seemed to be well on top now having seemingly figured out the home sides forward formation - but a break away let to a carbon copy of the Peregrines 1st goal in the 20th minute - 2-3 (9) to 0-8 - St Margarets now having to re-settle and figure out where the runners were coming from!

Amazingly Peregrines scored a 3rd goal in the 25 minute, their excellent full forward blasting a drive past the hapless Margarets goalkeeper - to go 4 up - 3-3 (12) to 0-8

But this St Margarets side don't do anything easy - having been in these situations before in this league - and they settled once more - and when Drew Barnwell scored a sensational placed goal after a move that included 4/6 of the forward line, St Margarets were back in the groove! 3-3 (12) to 1-8 (11)

Peregrines seemed to tire from their excursions in this first half and found it hard to stop the now purring Margarets machine and 4 more points followed - Margarets now in control - and 3 up! - 3-3 (12) to 1-12 (15)

A big turning point in this game occurred just on the stroke of half time - when Peregrines had a man sent off for a second yellow - an innocuous looking challenge - but deemed a second yellow by the referee.

This was cruel heat and half time came at the right time for both teams. The message surely for the Margarets boys was to continue as is and keep the scoreboard ticking over?

Peregrines came out in the 2nd half like men possessed - where did this resurgence come from? Their runners tearing into a St Margarets back line who couldn't come to grips with the free space - who was marking the runners? Peregrines knocked off 2 points in this time - the difference now 1 - 3-5 (14) to 1-12 (15)

But points by the excellent Jay Shanahan and Paul Lumley settled the nerves and dampened the immediate Peregrines onslaught - the difference back to 3 - 3-5 (14) to 1-12 (17)

Peregrines wouldn't lie down and were always a treat going forward - their half backs and half forwards combining brilliantly to get them up the pitch with their full forward line now deep and waiting for any mistakes.

It was those mistakes that Margarets limited but 2 hairy moments could have swung this tie - a poor kick-out by goalkeeper Richie Cantwell was intercepted at pace and when the ball was squared, only the butt of the post saved the Margarets boys! Then 5 minutes later, another poor kick-out was intercepted and squared - only for the magnificent Scott Kennedy to snuff out the danger with a last gasp gallop to clear what would have been a another 1 on 1!

It's these boys - Scott Kennedy, Sean Flood, Jason Shanahan & Ciaran Bruton - that make all the difference in these encounters with their running and bright, intelligent play! Combine that with other excellent ball players and some experienced footballers - and you see why this side are going so well in this Division!

Brefni Conaty in particular showed his class and composure in periods of this half - slowing the play down - and with Pat Daly, Thomas Kennedy, Robbie Lumley and John Kennedy marshalling the back line - there was no way Peregrines were going to cause too much damage in this half!

The momentum swung again in this tie in the 55th minute when Ciaran Bruton scored a wonderful solo goal - an unstoppable shot after a mesmerising run from the right! Margarets now leading 3-6 (15) to 2-12 (20)

The full time whistle came as a major relief in what was a very tough encounter with a very tough opponent - a common theme in this league - especially of late! The Margarets men are just doing enough in each encounter in a variety of different ways which is very impressive. What's also impressive is that in each of these games, they have different lads stepping up - everyone is literally doing their bit to contribute to this push!

Final score St Peregrines 3-08 (17) St Margarets 2-18 (24)

Great to see Gearoid Farrell at the game this evening - still sore from a nasty eye injury against Erins Isle

St Margarets 2-16 (22) Erins Isle 1-13 (16)

Erins Isle came to town on a balmy June evening and contributed to an intense top of the table clash with unbeaten St Margarets

The game started with Isles choosing to play uphill -  a play that made loads of sense - work hard in the 1st half to stay in the game then unleash the cavalry 2nd period.

Isles were intelligent throughout - waiting for the opportunity to intercept loose balls then breaking with missile accurate long balls into the forwards.

The Margarets backs took a while to settle into this bombardment on a hot sultry evening and limited Isles to 3 points after 15 minutes - that included some heroic defending by Martin Lumley who similar to his display against Fingallians a few weeks back - launched his body in the way of a sure goal - and came out of that tackle lucky to have his ankle still in tact! These Margarets backs have no regard for their bodies it seems!

The Margarets forwards in that time took a while to get into the pace of a frantic encounter - the Isles players looking fit and ultra motivated for this local contest - but kept the scoreboard ticking over - vital in these close contests. Fine intrinsic play by Paul Lumley, Jason Shanahan, Ciaran Bruton & Thomas Flood kept the scores level with 3 points

A further 2 points were added by the excellent Breffni Conaty and ever industrious Declan Cowley - Margarets leading by 2

Isles were the first to make a statement - and scored the only goal of the half - a high accurate ball into their full forward, who expertly caught, controlled and finished bottom corner. This was followed by 2 further points in a frantic 5 minutes in which the Isles men intercepted some poor kick-outs and dealt the ultimate punishment - Isles now 0-5 (5) to 1-5 (8) up

Play was stopped for 5 minutes due to a nasty head wound to midfielder warrior - Gearoid Farrell - who amazingly tried to play on afterwards! The brief break allowed the Margarets boys to regroup, settle a little and stem the tide. At the resumption, Margarets scored the next 2 points and a breathless first half ended Isles up 0-7 to 1-6 (9)

A inspirational half time talk by Robert Byrne and snippets from mentors Micheal Kennedy, James Fitzgerald and Jamie Nugent rallied the troops - the core message being that they hadn't actually played any football with any sort of rhythm in that first half and that the time to step up was now!

And so they did - Margarets starting with confidence, moving the ball around, loads of willing runners and fine combinations - and ultimately picked off 3 points without reply to go 1 up - 0-10 to 1-6 (9)

Isles came back into the contest with some fine running and support play and once again accurate balls into their forwards - adding 2 points to go 1 up once more - 0-10 to 1-8 (11)

But Margarets were in no mood to relinquish this tie and a fine move ended with the unstoppable Brefni Conaty moving up the pitch and cooly slotting the ball past the excellent Isles keeper - Margarets up by 2 - 1-10 (13) to 1-8 (11)

Isles were tiring - and a controversial sideline incident stopped the game for another 5 minute period and it seemed Isles had lost their cool and the control of this tie shifted

One man seemed to take this control upon himself - the magnificent Philly McCarthy - calling and constantly winning kick-out ball time after time and setting up forward play - the man looked possessed.

With Dave Martin, Declan Cowley and Sean 'Charlie' Byrne unstoppable engines and the younger guys - Ciaran Bruton, Scott Kennedy, Sean Flood and Jason Shanahan seriously stepping up - Margarets - as they did against St Monicas and Naomh Mearnóg - used all their experience and guile to slow the game down, keep possession, use the speed of the up and coming clubs major talent - and this seemed to suck the life out the Finglas men!

The killer blow came in the 50th minute when an excellent move - started by Davey Rielly - ended with Drew Barnwell setting up Tommy Flood for a 2nd goal - this close tie now seemingly put to bed - Margarets up by 5 - 2-10 (16) to 1-8 (11)

Isles to their credit kept going and asked many questions of the St Margarets backs in the last 10 minutes - but the backs kept them at arms length - which wasn't enough to prevent 2 fine points being scored - the margin down to 3 - 2-10 (16) to 1-10 (13)!

Isles sensed something was left in this game - and began an onslaught - but again - last minute blocks, forwards following runners, bodies on the line (Pat Daly / John Kennedy) and every man keeping their cool (in particular Thomas Kennedy) - limited Isles to frees which they wasted as they sought that elusive 2nd goal rather than taking their points!

There was relief and exhaustion at the final whistle - both teams realised they were in an intense contest this evening! Not much between them!

Final score St Margarets 2-16 (22) Erins Isle 1-13 (16)

Mens 3 - Div 11 North - Garristown 0-12 St Margarets 3-5

St Margarets reigned supreme in this latest Go Ahead Adult Football League Division 11 North encounter on a cold night in Garristown making it 2 wins out of 2 having put Na Fianna (1-06 to 4-10) to the sword 2 weeks previously.

It was a very even contest from start to finish with the lead yo-yoing by the odd point. Garristown seemed to have learned a lot from their friendly encounter with the same opposition 3 weeks previously with a lot of personnel changes, positional changes and a huge bench.

Garristown started off brightly playing down hill with plenty of runners off the ball, their fast thinking half backs and half forwards working well to conjure up 2/3 points.

St Margarets got to grips with the pace and started to hold the ball more, some nice scores followed including a goal by Jason Shanahan and a few long range points. The Margarets defenders were well organised and well marshalled by the ever impressive John Kennedy.

The sides went in level at the break - 1-3 to 0-6 points.

Garristown once again started fast in the 2nd half and scored 2/3 points without reply - the up hill seemingly suiting their patient style with St Margarets once again struggling with the pace and not being able to pick out their forwards down hill.

But a goal from the lightening Steven Maundsley who replaced Breffni Conaty at half time - assisted by the ever impressive centre half back Pat Daly - settled everything down and Margarets once again gained their sense of control in the game. You simply can't question the sheer grit of this Margarets side!

Scores from Graham Murtagh and Ivan Smith and calm ball retention by substitute Jamie Nugent and Declin Cowley helped Margarets stay in the game as Garristown's quick thinking midfield and forwards nudged them into a 2 point lead 10 minutes remaining.

A key incident in which the heroic Pat Daly put his body on the line to defend a quick Garristown break almost led to the player being sent off, the resulting free was turned over, played nicely down to the Margarets forwards and ended in a Tommy Flood goal! Margarets led by 2!

What followed was super game management - as they did against Na Fianna, Margarets kept possession for the final 5 minutes to see it out 0-12 to 3-5 to make it 2 wins from 2.

This team is ever improving! next up Ballymun Kickhams March 20th.

St Margaret's Ladies into Championship Final

On Wednesday evening on our home pitch in St Margaret's in glorious sunshine our Adult Ladies team defeated Na Fianna in the semi final of the Junior E Championship to set up a mouth watering Final with Round Towers Lusk on Wednesday the 01st September away in Lusk at 19.15. This was a hard fought win and saw both teams playing the game with intent from the first whistle to the last. As was shown by the girls in the final group stage game they are not easily rattled and withstood the pressure from Na Fianna going in at half time with a three point lead. The third quarter was where the girls turned up the heat on Na Fianna and pulled away. They battened down the hatches after that and despite a few scares saw out the game to win by 7 points in the end. Our defence withstood early pressure from Na Fianna with Tutsy in goal, Rachel Dwyer at full back and Sophie McQuillan Clarke at centre back in particular soaking up much of that pressure. Kirsten Doyle, Jodi Tynan, Leah Burke and Lauren McDonnell were battling hard for every ball giving the Na Fianna forwards no time to settle. Our midfield pairing of Charmaine Doyle and Yvonne Dwyer again worked tirelessly providing quality ball into the forwards who took the baton and done the business at their end. Rebecca McGuinnes in particular tormented the Na Fianna defence for the duration of the game. Tasha Barnwall again pulled the strings at centre forward and when necessary was back putting her shoulder to the wheel helping out the defence. Kate Dwyer despite being tightly marked was up to her own high standard and drove the forwards on at every opportunity. Skye Healy, Shauna Martin and Caroline Lawlor were on hand to make sure the team were driving forward at every opportunity. When legs were tiring Kaylah Clarke and the ever young Nessa Madigan came in to make sure Na Fianna were not going to get any opportunity to make a come back.
St Margaret's Team: Tutsy Cogley, Kirsten Doyle, Rachel Dwyer, Jodi Tynan, Leah Burke, Sophie McQuillan Clarke, Lauren McDonnell, Yvonne Dwyer, Charmaine Doyle 0-2, Rebecca McGuinness 1-2, Tasha Barnwall 0-2, Skye Healy 0-1, Kate Dwyer 1-6, Caroline Lawlor 0-1, Shauna Martin 1-2. Subs used: Nessa Madigan 0-1, Kaylah Clarke.

Our Ladies team completed the group stages of the championship last night unbeaten with an excellent display against the also unbeaten Round Towers Lusk. This gives the girls a home game in the semi final against Na Fianna C on Wednesday the 25th next. The girls started the game well and withstood a period of pressure from the Lusk girls with some brave defending from the girls particularly Tutsy in goals, Rachel Dwyer at full back, the ever reliable Sophie at centre back and Leah Burke at wing back. Slowly but surely the girls got a foothold on the game with Yvonne Dwyer at midfield dominating her position with Skye Healy along side her putting in a great shift. Our forwards worked hard for their scores but took the chances that came their way well. In particular Tasha Barnwall at centre forward who worked tirelessly up and down the field helping the defence when needed. Becca McGuinness and Kate Dwyer were working the Lusk defence hard as usual taking their scores well. Shauna Martin arguably got the score of the game with a fine goal into the top corner of the net. Caroline Lawlor and Nessa were leading by example by working their socks off.
